Teach your child about health nutrition
Every good parent wants their child to get good health nutrition, growing up with healthy eating habits. But practically speaking, it can be quite difficult in today’s modern times to instill good health nutrition habits in our children. The temptations are everywhere, from fast food to commercials, sugar cereal to juice boxes, life seems bent on teaching our children poor health nutrition. But with a bit of effort and a plan, any parent can encourage good eating habits in their children.
Start Early
The biggest key to promoting good health nutrition is to start early. Children are all eyes and ears from the day they are born. They hear what you say, watch what you do. Start from day one, talking to them while you prepare dinner, explaining the importance of good nutrition. When they start drinking juice, water it down, so that they receive less fructose and more water. When it is time to begin solid foods, ensure good health nutrition habits by starting with sweet potatoes, carrots and other healthful vegetables, which can kick-start a child’s taste for good health nutrition.
Set an Example
Children do as you do, not as you say – this is true for health nutrition and everything! If the health nutrition of your child is important to you then you need to show it by setting an example. If you eat healthful foods your child is more likely to eat healthful foods. Some ideas include: always put fruit on the table to be eaten after dinner, limiting the desire for after dinner sweets; fill everyone’s plate half full of vegetables, then fill the rest with meat and carbohydrates; fill your plate one time, then do not take seconds, only a little fruit for dessert.
Get them Involved
Children are usually much more willing to do things when they are a part of the action: Let your child help you prepare foods when possible. They will love mixing the pancake batter, cracking the eggs, helping cut the crusts off sandwiches and much more. Let them fill everyone’s dessert bowl with grapes, putting equal amounts in each bowl, or sprinkle candy sprinkles on the occasional ice cream treat.
Make it Easy
If something is easier to do, we are all more likely to do it. Find simple ways to ensure good health nutrition in your family. For example, when you cook a healthy, low fat turkey chili, make a double portion, freezing half of it for a quick dinner at a later date. Also, clean fruits and vegetables immediately after purchase so they are ready in the fridge for a quick snack, even for a hurried teen or spouse.
